Metal Braces

Do you or your child have misaligned teeth that you want to have corrected? One of the most common ways to correct teeth alignment issues like an overbite or underbite is by the use of metal braces.

What Are Metal Braces?

When most people think of braces, metal braces are what come to mind — the traditional wires and brackets. If you choose to receive metal braces, your Laredo Orthodontist will attach the brackets to each tooth and connect the brackets with metal wire. As your teeth alignment changes, these will need to be adjusted to help you achieve the perfect smile.

How Do Metal Braces Work?

Braces work by applying a small amount of continuous pressure on the teeth (tightenting the braces wire over time) so they slowly move into the desired position.

How Long Will I or My Child Need to Wear Metal Braces?

Each patient is different, so the length of time each person needs to wear braces varies depending on several factors: how much the teeth have to move within the mouth; the health of the teeth and gums; the amount of space available in the mouth; and more. However, the average length of time spent wearing braces is 18 months to 2 years.

Are Metal Braces Right for Me or My Child?

If you have an overbite, underbite, or another type of crooked teeth that you want to have corrected, your Laredo orthodontist may suggest that you get braces. One of the benefits of metal braces is that they are less expensive than other popular options like clear braces and Invisalign. Metal braces are also the best (and sometimes only) option to correcting more severe misalignment, like an overcrowded mouth.

An additional benefit of metal braces for your child is that the rubber bands Laredo orthodontics use with the braces come in a variety of color options that are changed regularly, so your child can enjoy the fun of changing the braces' appearance.

Taking Care of Metal Braces

Caring for metal braces is important since you will be wearing them for a period of time. However, caring for them is relatively easy if you follow these tips:

  • Do not eat foods that are not braces-friendly. Chewy foods like caramels and other soft candies could damage metal braces. Avoid foods that you have to bite into like corn on the cob or apples, as doing so could damage your braces. Hard or crunchy foods like nuts or ice can damage the brackets and wires of your braces.
  • Brush and floss regularly. It is important to brush and floss whether you have braces or not, but it is even more important when you wear braces. Keeping up with your brushing and flossing will help you avoid stains to your teeth and keep your braces looking good for the duration that you wear them.
  • Follow up with your Laredo orthodontist as required. Since braces work by continuously applying pressure to move teeth into the desired position, follow-up appointments are important to make sure that the teeth are moving properly and so any necessary adjustments can be made.
