While orthodontic emergencies are rare, they can happen, and it's important to know what you should do.

How to Handle Orthodontic Emergencies

True orthodontic emergencies are exceedingly rare, but there are a number of problems that may come up during orthodontic treatment. Fortunately, most issues can be solved at home or with a simple phone call to our office. Others, however, may require an emergency repair appointment or for you to head to an emergency room. As your Zapata orthodontist, we're here to help no matter what you're dealing with. Here are a few of the most common orthodontic emergencies and what you can do to solve them:

  • Dislodged Wire: Sometimes, the archwire can come free of brackets or stick out, causing it to poke into and irritate soft tissues. You can use a clean pencil eraser to push it down away from the problem area or cover the area with a piece of dental wax, but if it continues to be a problem, please call our office for further steps.

  • Loose Bracket or Band: If a bracket breaks loose from a tooth but is still attached to the archwire, don't try to remove it. Instead, cover the whole area in dental wax and call us to schedule a repair appointment. If the bracket does fall off, keep it and bring it with you to the appointment.

  • Loose Wire: If a wire comes loose from a band, you can first try to guide it back into place using a sterilized pair of tweezers. If this isn't possible, cut the loose portion of the wire using a sterilized pair of fingernail clippers. This should be a last resort though, and we encourage you to call our office for advice regardless.

  • Headgear Doesn't Fit: Normally, this happens when the headgear isn't put on correctly. Double check that you're wearing the headgear according to our instructions, and also make sure you're wearing your headgear for the full number of hours, as failing to do so can cause problems with treatment. If your facebow gets bent or your headgear is damaged in any way, make sure to call us for assistance.

  • Soreness or Discomfort: It's normal to feel some soreness or discomfort when you first get your braces or after an appointment. You can use a warm salt-water rinse, over the counter pain relievers, or a cold compress to treat the discomfort, and it should fade in a few days. If the pain continues or gets worse, though, call our office and let us know.
