How To Avoid Orthodontic Emergencies This Holiday SeasonAt Laredo Orthodontics, Dr. Andrea Font, Dr. Patrick Moore, and our dental team know how difficult it can be for you and your children to have an orthodontic-friendly holiday season this year, especially with Christmas right around the corner! Nothing says the holiday season more than Christmas tree shopping, spending quality time with family and friends, and making wish lists for Santa...but unfortunately, many of your holiday festivities will have tons of foods, desserts, and treats that can cause harm to your family’s orthodontic appliances, and maybe even an orthodontic emergency!

A Braces-Friendly Christmas

Hard candies, sticky sweets, and delicious pies contain enormous amounts of sugar that can cake onto and in between you and your children’s teeth, making it difficult to properly floss and brush all of that cavity-causing sugar away while wearing braces. Additionally, loads of carbohydrates, starches, and hard savory foods can damage orthodontic appliances all the same! Here at Laredo Orthodontics, it’s our goal to make sure that you and your kids have a wonderful holiday season this year, so our team has compiled a list of holiday tips and tricks that will help you avoid any unnecessary orthodontic emergencies this year.

Step 1: Proper Holiday Oral Hygiene

Regardless if you or your children are wearing braces or not, it’s critically important to brush and floss your teeth and/or brackets right after each and every holiday feast! Proper oral hygiene is integral to ensuring your braces are doing their job, as well as making sure your family’s teeth and gums are as healthy as they can be.

After each holiday meal or treat, get the whole family together to brush and floss all those sugars and starches away as soon as possible, and make sure there aren’t any food particles stuck on or in between teeth or brackets! Finally, and most importantly, good nutrition and a healthy diet are the most crucial elements for maintaining a healthy smile, so make sure to consume brace-safe holiday sweets in moderation.

Step 2: Eat Holiday Treats On The ‘Nice’ List

Christmas is one of the most exciting holidays of the year! From putting up festive decorations, to baking cookies for Kris Kringle, Christmas is chalked full of holiday cheer around every corner. Regardless of what holiday festivities you have planned for your family, there will likely be decadent baked goods and sugary snacks at every turn. This Xmas, make sure your braces wearers try to avoid holiday sweets like gingerbread cookies, candy canes, peanut brittle, fudge, and popcorn, as these foods can damage brackets and bend archwires...causing an unwarranted orthodontic emergency!

Some of our favorite Xmas treats on the ‘Nice’ list include:

  • Hot chocolate
  • Soft sugar cookies
  • Brownies
  • Cupcakes
  • Strawberry cheesecake
  • Soft chocolates

Step 3: Schedule a Post-Xmas Orthodontic Exam with Your Laredo Family Orthodontists!

After the holiday season comes to a close, it’s a good idea to visit your orthodontic experts at Laredo Orthodontics for a dental exam! After a month-long frenzy of holiday meats, sweets, and treats, we will make sure that your braces are in tip-top shape, and that you’re maintaining proper upkeep on the cleanliness of your teeth and gums.
