Summer is over, and that means it's time for Halloween! With all the haunted houses, creepy costumes, and sugary treats, it is easy to forget that your braces need special attention during this holiday. Follow these easy tips to avoid problems with your metal or Invisalign braces, and make the most of your Happy Halloween!

Candy, Candy, and More Candy!

First and foremost, everyone knows that Halloween is about all the candy, and boy is there a lot of it. Here are a few guidelines to avoid a tricky situation with your braces:

Avoid Sticky Candy

When going through your candy, be sure to avoid sticky and gelatinous candies like caramel, gummies, and taffy. These kinds of candy can stick to the metal braces, wires, and Invisalign, and pull them right off your teeth. Better to stick with easily chewed candy like chocolate and peanut butter cups.

Avoid Hard Candy and Candy With Nuts

Don't eat hard candy like suckers or jolly ranchers. These treats can easily knock one of your braces off or loosen a wire. What's more, sucking on a hard candy over time means that your teeth are exposed to sugar longer. Stick to softer easy-to-chew candy in bite-sized pieces. If you have a large piece of soft candy, break it up into smaller pieces, to make it easier to chew and less likely to do damage to your braces.

Limit Your Candy Intake

Don't eat too much candy! We know that you'll probably eat a little more than usual, since it is Halloween, but limit your intake to a couple of pieces a day. Too much candy will lead to greater chances of tooth decay.

Drink Extra Water

To keep your mouth cleaner throughout the day, drink water regularly. In addition, when you eat a bunch of candy, be sure to drink a big glass of water along with it. That will help keep the sugar from sticking to your teeth and causing cavities.

Brush Your Teeth More

If you are eating more candy, more sugar is getting stuck in and around your braces, so be sure to brush your teeth thoroughly three or four times per day. Definitely after every meal, and right after snacking on sugary treats.

Regular Dental Hygiene

In addition to the additional brushing you should do after eating candy, be sure to keep up with your normal dental hygiene regimen. Brush three times per day, floss every night, and use mouthwash with fluoride to keep your teeth strong and less prone to cavities. Remember, you have braces to create a brilliant, winning smile! Don't put that smile at risk with poor dental hygiene.

Careful With The Costumes

When choosing a costume, ensure that you avoid anything that will rest on or interfere with your teeth, and possibly risk damaging your braces. Fake vampire teeth and other such costumes are a no-go until your braces are off. Also make sure that you are not wearing anything over the face that could get caught in your braces, like a veil or shroud. Fabric or masks that are of a solid material are better than mesh or netting with holes that can get stuck on your braces.
