Spring break is almost here, and for families across Laredo, that means road trips to San Antonio, flights to the beach, or a week packed full of theme parks and late-night tacos. It also means a break from the usual routine — school schedules, homework, and yes, orthodontic appointments. While a little vacation chaos is part of the fun, your braces don't take a holiday. A few smart habits before and during your trip can protect your progress and keep your treatment on track, no matter where your spring adventure takes you.
At Laredo Orthodontics, Dr. Catalina Zambrano and Dr. Andrea Font Rytzner see this time of year as an opportunity to help patients travel confidently and return ready to keep moving toward their best smile.
Schedule a Check-Up Before You Leave
The single best thing you can do before a spring break trip is stop by the office for a quick check before you head out. A loose bracket or a wire that's starting to poke can go from minor annoyance to a real problem when you're hours from home and unable to reach your orthodontist.
A pre-trip appointment lets us confirm your hardware is secure, address any issues proactively, and give you a clean bill of orthodontic health to travel with. If your next scheduled appointment falls during spring break, ask our team about coming in a few days early — we're happy to accommodate.
Pack an Orthodontic Travel Kit
Drugstore dental aisles are not always easy to find on the road, especially if you're traveling internationally or to a more remote area. Before you leave, put together a travel-friendly orthodontic kit so you're never caught unprepared.
- Orthodontic Wax: A must-have for any poking wire or irritating bracket. Apply a small piece directly to the problem area for immediate relief.
- Interdental Brushes: These small brushes clean around brackets and wires far more effectively than a standard toothbrush alone, making them ideal for travel.
- Dental Floss with a Floss Threader: Food trapped under wires is uncomfortable and can lead to plaque buildup, especially when you're eating out more than usual.
- A Travel-Sized Water Flosser: Compact water flossers are a game-changer for anyone in braces and well worth the small amount of luggage space.
- Extra Elastics: If you've been prescribed rubber bands as part of your treatment, pack more than you think you'll need. They're small, lightweight, and easy to lose.
- A Mirror and Small Flashlight: Helpful for checking your brackets after meals when bathroom lighting isn't cooperating.
- Pain Reliever: After a recent adjustment, some tenderness is normal. Keep an over-the-counter option handy just in case.
Know What to Eat (and What to Skip)
Spring break often means new foods, festival snacks, boardwalk treats, and meals that look nothing like your usual weekday routine. Most of that is perfectly fine — with a little awareness.
The foods that cause the most trouble with braces are hard, crunchy, or sticky. Biting into a corn cob at a cookout, chewing on hard candy, or snacking on caramel popcorn can pop brackets and bend wires, which can slow your treatment progress and turn a fun trip into a stressful situation. It's not about avoiding everything enjoyable — it's about making smart swaps. Cut your corn off the cob, opt for soft chocolate over sticky candy, and skip the ice chewing habit entirely.
When in doubt, softer is always safer: pasta, grilled proteins cut into small pieces, soft fruits, and cooked vegetables are all great choices that still let you eat well on the road.
Stay on Top of Oral Hygiene Away From Home
It's easy for routines to slip on vacation, and brushing and flossing are often the first things to go when schedules get unpredictable. But during orthodontic treatment, consistent hygiene isn't optional — food debris trapped around brackets for extended periods creates the ideal environment for cavities and white spot lesions, which are permanent marks that can appear on tooth enamel after braces are removed.
A simple rule: brush after every meal, even if that means excusing yourself to find a restroom at a restaurant. A quick rinse with water when brushing isn't immediately possible is better than nothing. Think of it as a two-minute investment in the smile you're working so hard to achieve.
If Something Breaks, Stay Calm and Know What to Do
Even with the best preparation, orthodontic mishaps happen. A bracket can come loose after biting into something unexpected. A wire can shift and start poking the inside of your cheek. Knowing how to handle these situations temporarily keeps you comfortable until you can get back to the office.
- Poking Wire: Use the eraser end of a pencil or a clean cotton swab to gently push the wire back against the tooth. Apply orthodontic wax over the area for cushioning.
- Loose Bracket: If it's still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax to reduce irritation. If it comes off entirely, keep it and bring it to your appointment
- Lost Aligner or Retainer: If you're in clear aligner treatment, contact our office as soon as possible. In the meantime, wear the previous aligner set to maintain your tooth position if available.
- Significant Pain or Swelling: This is not typical and should be evaluated. Contact Laredo Orthodontics right away so we can advise you on next steps, even while you're away.
Our team is reachable by phone, and we'll do everything we can to help you troubleshoot remotely if needed.
For Clear Aligner Patients: A Few Extra Tips
If you or your child is in Invisalign or another clear aligner system, spring break comes with its own set of reminders. Aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours per day to stay on schedule — something that's easier to let slip when days are unstructured and packed with activities.
Keep your aligner case with you at all times. The most common reason aligners are lost is being wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant and accidentally thrown away. A brightly colored or personalized case is easier to spot and harder to forget. When sipping on anything other than water, remove your aligners. Sugary or acidic beverages trapped against the aligner surface can damage both the plastic and the tooth enamel underneath.
Come Back Ready to Keep Going
Spring break is meant to be a reset — a chance to relax, connect with family, and recharge before the final stretch of the school year. With a little preparation, there's no reason your orthodontic progress has to pause along with everything else.
When you return, schedule a check-in with our team so we can confirm everything is on track and make any needed adjustments. Whether you're in braces or clear aligners, every appointment is a milestone moving you closer to your final result.
